Over the next few weeks, we’ll be featuring each of the 16 businesses who are participating in Chinatown Dining Week, running January 9-19, 2020.
First to be profiled: we sat down with Angus Tam, owner of Asian Express Hot Pot, 10586 100 Street (Chinatown location).
Tell us a bit more about the restaurant.
A group of friends came together to open the restaurant after years of working in the food industry. The restaurant is named to represent the sauces and bases used for hot pot that is influenced by different Asian cuisines from countries such as China, Japan, Malaysia, and Korea. Thus, the name Asian Express Hot Pot.
How long has the restaurant been open?
10 years.
What is the style of cuisine served at the restaurant?
We serve individual hotpots with your choice of bases and sauces. We offer over 30 different sauces for variety, so there is something for everyone!
What makes your restaurant special?
We were recognized as one of the 100 best restaurants in Canada from 2014-2016. Everything on our menu is homemade and healthy.
Why do you think people should dine in Chinatown?
Edmonton’s Chinatown is a diverse community with a lot to offer! It is a one stop shop for all your needs; you can shop, dine, and take in the beautiful scenery and culture at the same time. There is a lot to discover in Chinatown!
As your restaurant participated in Chinatown Dining Week over the past two years, can you tell us about that experience?
We would like more people to come and experience Edmonton’s Chinatown. There are some local issues [happening] here, hence we need more people to be aware of it. We also want to bring more awareness to our restaurant: the first hot pot restaurant in Canada serving individual pots! We have been awarded the Best Asian Food in Canada on Asia Star TV, and Top 3 Best Late Night Restaurant by the Avenue Magazine in 2017 and 2018.
Do you have any hopes for the future of Edmonton’s Chinatown?
I’d like to see more people visiting Chinatown, and a brighter Chinatown that is safe for everyone who visits.
Asian Express Hot Pot will be offering the following 2-course dinner menu for $18 during Chinatown Dining Week.
Main: Hot Pot Soup Base, choice of 5 items from menu, and choice of Regular Noodles or Rice Noodles
